Overt Instruction

Overt instruction involves direct explicit teaching, by an educator or a knowledgeable other such as a student or guest presenter. To be effective instruction, the educator must know their students, their current level of understanding, and ideally, their situated practice. Then, the educator can put in place the appropriate repertoire for student learning. Dr. Allen Luke (video below) poetically describes effective educators; "Really skilled teachers can weave or alternate their pedagogy depending on what they're teaching and who the students are."

"Show them how to tie the knot."

Dr. Allen Luke, 3:57 minutes
